On the North Downs the mistake is assuming that height means safety. It does not. Clay-with-flints capping the Chalk traps perched water above it, sloping plots drive lateral seepage through downhill walls, and in aquifer recharge years the water table itself arrives. The survey year matters enormously here — more than anywhere else we work.

We design for the wet years. On the Chalk that means assuming the water table the aquifer can actually produce rather than the one visible on the day, and specifying drained protection with the capacity to cope. It costs more than a tanking slurry. It is also the difference between a basement that works every year and one that works most years.
